Liverpool: Capital of Culture 2008
Liverpool: Capital of Culture 2008!
So 2008 is over and we have welcomed 2009. If you live in Liverpool or are planning on visiting, you probably thinking that you are too late for all the freebies that were being given away in 08! Well you’d be wrong!
There are still plenty of things available for you to see and do without spending too much of that hard earned cash!
Did you know?
1. All the national museums in liverpool are completely Free, yes thats right they’re FREE! They open 7 days a week from 10am - 5pm, with the exception of Christmas day and New Years Day! They include the popular World museum with its very own aquarium, bug house and space auditorim! The maritime musuem telling you about Liverpool’s background in ships and it even has real artifacts from the Titanic!
2. Both Cathedral’s in Liverpool are also free to look around! Although if you wanted to make a small contribution I’m sure a certain someone would be extremely grateful! The oldest of the 2 cathedrals is the Anglican Cathedral, it is also the biggest in Europe (SqFt), the 2nd is the metropolitan Cathedral, known to locals as Paddy’s Wigwam, due to its unique structure.
3. The famous Tate Art Gallery is also free, but welcomes contributions. It is constantly being updated, so every visit can be different!
4. The Albert Dock is a great place for a nice stroll, it really doesn’t matter what the weather is like, its undercover, which I suppose is a benefit, as the weatheri n Liverpool can be a little unpredictable!
5. Go to Crosby for the day. The price of a train fair, and you can see ‘Another Place’. The internationally acclaimed artist, who most famous piece of work is the ‘Angel of the North’ near Newcaslte, has brought his latest piece to liverpool, so what you waiting for go take a peek!
So what if you do have a bit of extra cash to spare? Well the list is endless!
But here are my top 5
1. The beatles museum: the famous foursome originated in this awesome city so it would be rude not to visit it really!
2. The Yellow Duck Marine: yes thats right! A duck Marine! Its half car half boat! You will be taken on a guided trip around the city in the Duck and you finish it with a SPLASH in the Albert Docks.
3. Liverpool Football Club Museum & Tour: you really need to book these tours in advanc as they are quickly booked up. You will recieve a full tour of the ground and finish with a look around the museum including a look at those trophies, you’ve always wondered how big they really are?
4. The Empire Theatre: there is always something great to watch at the Empire, from Flashdance to Swan Lake, from Chicago to Cinderella. If you look online and in local papers when you arrive you may find a good deal.
5. Take a FERRY CROSS THE MERSEY, take in the skyline of Liverpool on this boat ride, I will advise you to try to avoid rainy days, otherwise you’ll end up looking like you’ve been in the Mersey rather than on it!
Where shall I stay, I hear you say!
There is accommodation to suit every and their pockets.
From hostels to boutique hotels.
Some of the better hotels in the city include:
The Liner Hotel: located directly next to Lime St station it is a 3* hotel with a 5* service.
The Hard Days Night: a Beatles themed hotel, situated by the new Liverpool One shops.
Holiday Inn: A well known group of hotels, it is situated in the city centre.
The Jurys Inn: located at the Docks, it is a short walk to the city centre.
For hostels:
The International Inn: A well maintained hostel located by John Moores University.
Embassie Hostel: just a short walk from the centre, located in a residential area.
YHA Hostels: well situated within walking distance to all attractions.
Liverpool for many years has been off the map, but now its back and its bigger and better than ever.
